The Downtown San Diego Hostel is well located in the "partying" part of the city. Unfortunately the beds are not well maintained and ventilation is lacking. And there doesn't seem to be anywhere you can place your bike without having to worry whether it's going to be there the next day. It's ok if you need to spend just 1 night on a biking trip, but you may want to be more generous with your accomodations if you intend to spend more time downtown and explore the city and its surroundings. The Point Loma Hostel in San Diego is also well situated in a different sense. It's just 5 miles from downtown and a couple of miles from Cabrillo National Monument. You could easily cover the distance to the tip of Point Loma on a bike, which showcases interesting tidal ecology and great scenery overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable. Defnitely recommended whether it's a day's stay or longer, and worth the few more miles' travel to heart of the city compared to the Downtown hostel (and it's less expensive too). A bike rack is available in the courtyard for peace of mind. [contributed review] 3790 Udall Street

Pigeon Point Hostel (HI) This hostel is located next to the second-tallest lighthouse on the Pacific Coast. It is on the Pacific Coast route right on California Highway 1 (20 miles south of Half Moon Bay and 27 miles north of Santa Cruz. Clean and comfy with spectacular of the coast and ocean, when it is not blowing cold fog; which, because it usually is, is another reason why this place is great. It is right where you need it to be after a long day on the coast. Staying here was one of the highlights of my otherwise all-tent camping Coast tour. [contributed review] A little pricey. 210 Pigeon Point Road

Colonial Inn Hostel Surf city, here we come! This hostel is located three blocks off the Pacific Coast Route in downtown Huntington Beach. It is positioned perfectly for refuge after what most southbound tourists say is the toughest day on the Coast Route - negotiating L.A. and industrial areas of the Pacific Coast Highway.
